I am not quite sure when this particular tradition was started by my Mother, Nancy, because at the time I was just the "Aunt" to all the cousins who were decorating cookies. Now, I am fully invested as both an Aunt and a Mother of three. I love that there are three generations baking and decorating together!
Last week, my 10 year old niece, Leyla, and my 4 year old daughter, Rhiannon, and I helped Grandma Nancy (a.k.a. Nana as only my children call her) bake sugar cookies in preparation for the Annual Cousins' Sugar Cookie Decorating Day.
We used the sugar cookie recipe on the back of the Wilton Cookie Cutters. Once the dough was ready, the girls had a ball rolling it out on a marble slab and spreading the flour around. Their cookie selections this year were a snowman, a cross, a gingerbread man, a house, a Christmas tree, a star and a snowflake.
Nana has acquired a large stash of cookie cutters through the years. We used a combination of traditional metal cookie cutters and Wilton Comfort Grip cookie cutters which are extremely easy for the children to use.
